Where you stay in Cat Ba shapes the whole trip. Cat Ba Town puts you next to the tour desks and seafood restaurants, the Cat Co beaches trade a short walk for sand and sea views, and Lan Ha Bay or the national park offer something wilder. This guide to where to stay in Cat Ba compares each area honestly, including who it suits.

Updated October 2026.

1. What is the best area to stay in Cat Ba?

For most first-time visitors, the best base is either Cat Ba Town or the Cat Co beaches. Town is cheaper and puts everything on your doorstep. The beaches are calmer, with the sea a few steps away, and they're still within walking distance of the center.

If you want something more remote, add one night on Lan Ha Bay or in Viet Hai Village to a stay on the main island. That way you get the quiet without being cut off for your whole trip if the weather turns.

2. Cat Ba Town

Cat Ba Town is the island's hub, a compact harbor town of guesthouses, hotels, restaurants and tour agencies wrapped around the bay. It has the widest choice of rooms at every budget and the most places to eat. Ben Beo Pier, where most Lan Ha Bay boats leave, is about 2 km from the center.

The downside is that the town is busy and heavily built up. Since Typhoon Yagi in September 2024, parts of the waterfront have been rebuilt, and works in the center can mean noise and dust from early morning.

2.1. The waterfront

Hotels along the harbor road have the best views in town, with fishing boats and karsts right outside the window. You can step out to dinner, book a boat trip on the same street and walk back late without needing a ride.

Even so, the waterfront takes the brunt of the traffic, the nightlife and any construction. Ask for a room on a higher floor or away from the road, and read recent reviews for comments about noise before you book.

2.2. Side streets and the hillside

The lanes behind the waterfront and the hillside above town are usually quieter and often cheaper, while still a short walk from the harbor. Many family-run guesthouses and small hotels sit here.

The trade-off is fewer views and some steep walks, which matters with luggage or small children. This area suits budget travelers and anyone who plans to spend most days out on tours and just needs a comfortable bed.

3. The Cat Co beaches

The three Cat Co beaches sit just outside town, roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot from the center, a little more for Cat Co 2. Staying here means swimming before breakfast, watching the bay from your balcony and leaving the town's noise behind at night. Larger properties often have pools, which is useful when the sea is cool from January to March.

The trade-off is price. Rooms by the beach usually cost more than in town, and Cat Co 3, the cove closest to town, draws day visitors on summer weekends. Flamingo Cat Ba Sea & Sand Resort rises above Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2, and Cat Co 2 in particular stays calm and uncrowded on weekdays.

This area suits families, couples and anyone who wants beach time built into every day.

4. On Lan Ha Bay

Sleeping on the water is the closest you'll get to having Lan Ha Bay to yourself. Once the day boats head back to port, the bay goes quiet, and sunrise among the karsts is something most visitors never see. There are two main ways to do it.

4.1. Overnight cruises

One- and two-night cruises anchor in the bay overnight, with cabins, meals and activities such as kayaking built into the price. It's an easy, all-in-one option if you don't want to organize anything yourself.

Cabins are compact, though, and drinks are rarely included and cost more on board. From June to September, storms can cancel departures at short notice, so choose a cruise with a clear refund or rebooking policy.

4.2. Floating homestays

Around Cai Beo fishing village, a handful of floating homestays let you sleep on a raft among fish farms and limestone cliffs. It's simple, memorable and very different from a hotel night.

Expect basic bathrooms, plenty of mosquitoes and complete dependence on boats for coming and going. One night is usually enough for most travelers. Pack insect repellent and a headlamp.

5. Viet Hai Village and the island interior

Viet Hai is a small village inside Cat Ba National Park, reached by boat and then a bike ride or walk, or by a long hike through the forest. A few families run homestays, so you can stay overnight after the day visitors leave.

Rooms are simple, facilities are basic and electricity can be patchy, so book ahead and bring cash. Elsewhere in the interior, scattered farmstays and eco-lodges sit in green valleys away from the crowds. Most need your own transport, and there are few restaurants or ATMs nearby.

These options suit hikers, cyclists and slow travelers who want quiet over convenience.

6. Town, beach or bay: a quick comparison

Each area has a clear trade-off between convenience, comfort and quiet. Here's how they compare at a glance:

  • Cat Ba Town waterfront: Best for convenience. Everything is walkable, but expect noise, traffic and some construction.
  • Town side streets: Best for budget stays. Quieter and cheaper, with fewer views and some steep walks.
  • Cat Co beaches: Best for families and couples. The beach is on your doorstep and town is a short walk away, but prices are higher and summer weekends are busy.
  • Lan Ha Bay: Best for one memorable night. Sunrise on the water, with basic facilities and some weather risk.
  • Viet Hai and the interior: Best for hikers and slow travelers. Green and peaceful, but remote and dependent on transport.

7. When should you book?

Book early for summer, weekends and Vietnamese public holidays. From June to August, domestic travelers fill the island and room rates rise sharply, especially near the beaches. Popular places can sell out weeks ahead.

Spring and fall, roughly March to May and September to November, give a better balance of weather and price. Winter, from December to February, is the cheapest time to visit, but it's cool and gray, and some small guesthouses and homestays close for the season.

8. Good to know

  • Arrival: Buses from Hanoi may drop you at the edge of Cat Ba Town while works continue in the center, so allow for a short taxi or motorbike ride to your hotel.
  • Flexible rates: From June to September, storms can cancel boats and ferries. A refundable rate gives you room to adjust.
  • Noise: In town, a room facing away from the main road makes a real difference.
  • Cash: Small guesthouses and homestays often prefer cash, and ATMs are scarce outside town.
  • Families: Check each property's child policy before booking, since rules on extra beds and free stays vary.

9. FAQs about where to stay in Cat Ba

Is it better to stay in Cat Ba Town or on the beach?

Stay in town if budget and nightlife matter most. Stay by the Cat Co beaches if you want quieter nights and daily swims, and town is still a short walk away.

Can you walk from the Cat Co beaches to Cat Ba Town?

Yes. From Cat Co 3 and Cat Co 1, the center is roughly 10 to 15 minutes on foot over the hill, and a little longer from Cat Co 2, so you can easily walk in for dinner.

Should I stay on a cruise or on Cat Ba Island?

If you have two nights or more, do both. Spend one night on the bay for the sunrise and the rest on the island, where you have more choice and aren't tied to the weather.

How many nights should you stay in Cat Ba?

Two or three nights is ideal. That gives you a full day on Lan Ha Bay, a morning in the national park and time on the beach.

Where to stay in Cat Ba comes down to what you value most: Cat Ba Town for convenience, the Cat Co beaches for calm and the bay for a night to remember. Whichever you choose, book early for summer and keep your plans flexible in storm season.

Flamingo Cat Ba Sea & Sand Resort rises above Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2 beaches, a short walk from Cat Ba Town. In-house guests have free use of the beach and sun loungers, the Charm Pool and Shell Pool, and the Cau May Sky Walk, which links the Sea, Sand and Sun towers high above the bay. Unwind at Ruriko Onsen, then dine at Sea Restaurant. Children under 6 stay free when sharing their parents' bed.
