Cat Ba with Kids: How to Choose a Family Resort and Plan Your Trip
Cat Ba with kids: when to go, how to get there with little ones, what to do and seven things to check before booking a family resort.

Soft sand, warm water, real forest and short transfers make Cat Ba Island an easy pick for families. Choosing where to stay with kids takes more thought, though: how far is the beach, is there a pool, where do children play when it rains, and how do the child policies work? This guide covers when to go, how to get there with little ones and seven things to check before you book a family resort on Cat Ba.

1. Is Cat Ba good for families with kids?
Yes. It's one of the easiest family trips in northern Vietnam. Cat Ba is about 140 kilometers from Hanoi by expressway, and once you're on the island, the beach, the forest and Lan Ha Bay are all close together. Kids don't spend hours in a car between sights, and parents can fit naps around short outings.
Where you stay makes the biggest difference. A place right by the beach and a pool is far more relaxing with small children than a hotel in town, where every swim means packing up and heading out.
2. When is the best time to visit Cat Ba with kids?
April to October brings the most sunshine, calm seas and clear water. June and July are peak season, so the island gets busy and prices rise. If your dates are flexible, May and September give you good weather with fewer crowds.
From around July to October, storms can stop boats from heading into the bay. Check the forecast a few days ahead and leave a spare day in your plans.
3. How to get to Cat Ba with children
Many families take the Cat Hai – Phu Long cable car, about 10 minutes over the sea, which most kids love. Children under 1 meter ride free. The cable car runs in the morning and afternoon only. Outside those hours, the Dong Bai – Cai Vieng car ferry takes you across.
From Hai Phong, speedboats leave Ben Binh Pier for Cat Ba and take about 45–50 minutes. If your child gets seasick, give a light snack beforehand and pick seats near a window. Driving yourself means taking the car ferry, and you can bring the stroller, pool floats and toys without worrying about luggage limits.

4. Seven things to look for in a family resort
Here's what to check before you book, and how Flamingo Cat Ba Sea & Sand Resort, a 5-star resort on Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2 beaches, handles each one.
4.1. A beach a few minutes from your room
With kids, every trip to the sea means bags, towels and sometimes a stroller, so a beach on your doorstep matters most. The resort sits on its own private Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2 beaches, with soft sand and calm water in summer. Beach access and sun loungers are free for in-house guests.
4.2. Pools for the whole family
When the sea is choppy or a little one isn't ready for waves, a pool saves the day. The outdoor Charm Pool faces the sea and suits family swims, while the Shell Pool infinity pool on the 4th floor of the Sea tower is quieter, a good spot for parents. Both are free for in-house guests. The indoor all-season pool is charged separately.
4.3. Somewhere to play on rainy or hot days
Island weather changes fast: bright sun in the morning can turn into a downpour by afternoon. The Kids Club, an indoor play area with games for different ages, keeps those hours fun. The Kids Club is charged, and Reception can give you the opening hours when you check in.
4.4. Room sizes and child policies
Every rate includes two adults and two children under 6 sharing the existing bed with their parents. The resort doesn't provide extra beds. Charges for children aged 6 and over are listed on the stay policy page (flamingoseasand.com/en/stay-policy).
All rooms have a 2.4-meter king bed that splits into two singles, which makes sleeping arrangements easy. Bigger families will be more comfortable in the Residence One Bedroom Bay View: 65 m² with a separate living room and a bedroom where kids can nap undisturbed.
4.5. Easy meals
Young kids wake early and get hungry on the dot. Breakfast is served at Sand Restaurant on the 12th floor from 6:30 to 10:00 a.m. For lunch and dinner, Sun Restaurant on the 6th floor of the Sun tower serves a buffet and an à la carte menu from 6:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with room for 380 guests. Lunch and dinner are charged.
4.6. Short distances around the resort
The Sea, Sand and Sun towers are linked by the Cau May Sky Walk on the 11th and 12th floors, and an electric buggy runs between buildings. Both are free for in-house guests, so you won't be walking far with a child and a beach bag. Early mornings on the Sky Walk are cool, with views over the forest and Lan Ha Bay.
4.7. Flexible check-in and check-out
Check-in is from 3:00 p.m. and check-out by 11:00 a.m., and Reception welcomes guests until 2:00 a.m., which helps after a long journey. When you book direct on the official website, you can choose one free perk: check in up to 2 hours early, check out up to 2 hours late or a room upgrade, subject to availability.
5. Things to do on Cat Ba with kids
- Cat Co beaches: Soft sand and small summer waves, ideal for sandcastles and first swimming lessons.
- Half-day boat trip on Lan Ha Bay: Strange-shaped karst islands and the floating homes of Cai Beo fishing village. With little ones, choose a shorter tour and ask about child-size life jackets.
- Cannon Fort: Old guns and wartime tunnels on a hill above town fascinate kids. Tickets are around VND 40,000–50,000, and opening hours can change with the season and the managing authority's decisions, so ask Reception before you go.
- Cat Ba National Park: A first real walk in the forest. With young children, stick to short trails and start early.
- Monkey Island: Kids love watching the monkeys, but keep your distance, put food away and don't feed the animals.
6. Keeping kids safe on the island
- Always keep an adult close by at the pool, on the beach, on boats and on elevated walkways.
- Avoid strong sun from around 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., and reapply sunscreen after every swim.
- Offer water often, especially on hot days.
- Keep children in life jackets for the whole boat trip, even when they're sitting inside.
- Put a note with your name and phone number in your child's pocket in case you get separated in a crowd.
