Lan Ha Bay Kayaking and Boat Trips: A Practical Guide

Flamingo Cat Ba Sea & Sand Resort

How Lan Ha Bay kayaking and boat trips work from Cat Ba Island: tour types, the best stops, 2026 price ranges and when to go.

Kayaking on Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba

Lan Ha Bay spreads off the southeast coast of Cat Ba Island, a maze of limestone islands, quiet lagoons and small beaches. The best way to see it is low on the water, from a kayak or a small boat. This guide covers how Lan Ha Bay kayaking and boat trips work, where they go, what they cost and when to book.

Updated October 2026.

1. Where do Lan Ha Bay boat trips start?

Most day trips leave from Ben Beo Pier, about 2 kilometers east of Cat Ba Town. It's a short taxi or scooter ride, or a 25-minute walk along the coast road. Many tours include pickup from hotels in town.

Some overnight cruises board on the Hai Phong side of the crossing and sail into Lan Ha from there, which suits travelers coming straight from Hanoi. If you're already staying on Cat Ba, a trip from Ben Beo saves you the transfer and gives you more time on the water.

2. What kinds of boat trips are there?

You'll find four main options. They differ mostly in boat size, group size and how much of the day you spend paddling rather than sitting on deck.

2.1. Half-day and full-day group tours

The classic Lan Ha trip is a shared wooden boat with a guide, lunch on board and kayaks for one or two stops. Full-day tours typically leave around 8 a.m. and return between 4 and 5 p.m. Half-day tours of four to five hours cover fewer stops and suit families with young children. Groups can be large in July and August, so ask how many people the boat takes.

2.2. Upscale day cruises

A step up from the standard tour, these use newer boats with sun decks, better lunches and smaller groups. Itineraries are similar, but the pace is gentler and the boats look after you more. They're worth it if comfort matters more than price, or if you're celebrating something.

2.3. Overnight cruises

Spending a night on the bay lets you see Lan Ha at dusk and dawn, when the day boats have gone. Most overnight trips are one night, leaving late morning and returning around midday the next day. Cabins range from simple to boutique with private balconies. Many activities, kayaking included, are bundled in, but check the inclusions carefully.

2.4. Private boats

Hiring a whole boat makes sense for a family or small group who want to set their own timing. You can arrange a short private ride out to Cai Beo fishing village from Ben Beo, or a full day with your own route. Agree the route, the hours and what's included before you leave the pier.

3. Kayaking in Lan Ha Bay

Kayaking is the highlight of almost every Lan Ha trip. The water is sheltered by islands on all sides, so it's usually calm enough for beginners, and the karst walls rise straight up beside your paddle.

3.1. Guided kayak trips

On a standard boat tour you'll paddle for 30 minutes to an hour at one or two stops, often through a cave arch into an enclosed lagoon. Dedicated kayak tours spend most of the day in the boat's kayaks, covering more lagoons and smaller beaches. Some operators also run evening paddles to look for bioluminescent plankton when conditions allow. A guide matters here: some cave passages are low and only easy to pass at certain tides, and guides know when to go.

3.2. Renting a kayak on your own

You can rent single and double kayaks near the piers and some beaches around Cat Ba Town, usually by the hour or by the day. Independent paddling suits confident kayakers who stay close to shore and come back well before dark. Boat traffic around the piers can be heavy, the channels look alike from water level and weather changes quickly in summer. If you've never kayaked at sea, start with a guided trip.

4. Where do the boats and kayaks go?

Itineraries vary by operator, but most mix a few of these stops:

  • Dark and Bright Cave: A sea cave roughly 70 meters long that you paddle through into a lagoon ringed by cliffs. It's the most famous kayak spot in Lan Ha and gets busy around midday.
  • Ba Trai Dao: Three small islets with pale sand beaches, named for their peach shapes. A popular swimming stop in summer.
  • Monkey Island: A beach island where monkeys roam near the shore. Keep food, bags and sunglasses out of reach.
  • Viet Hai Village: A small farming village inside Cat Ba National Park, reached by boat and then a short bike ride.
  • Cai Beo fishing village: Floating homes and fish farms about 1.5 kilometers from Cat Ba Town. Ask before you photograph people's homes.
  • Ho Ba Ham: Three connected lagoons reached through low cave passages, usually on longer kayak itineraries.

5. How much do Lan Ha Bay trips cost?

Prices change with the season, the boat and what's included. These ranges come from 2025–2026 sources and are a guide only:

  • Half-day group tour: Around VND 450,000–650,000 per person.
  • Full-day group tour: Around VND 750,000–950,000 per person, with lunch and kayaking.
  • Upscale day cruise: Around VND 1,000,000–1,500,000 per person.
  • Overnight cruise: Around VND 2,200,000–6,500,000 per person for one night.
  • Kayak rental: Around VND 150,000–250,000 for two hours, or VND 300,000–500,000 for a day, depending on single or double.
  • Lan Ha Bay fee: Recent sources put it at around VND 80,000 per adult. Tours usually include it; check if you go independently.

Drinks on board are often extra and can cost far more than in town. On overnight cruises, tips of VND 100,000–300,000 are common.

6. When is the best time to kayak Lan Ha Bay?

Late spring and early autumn usually give the best balance of warm water and settled weather. From May to September the sea is warm enough for long swims, but summer also brings heavy showers and, from around July, typhoon risk. Winter paddling is possible on calm days, though it's cool and often misty.

Time of day matters as much as the month. Early morning and late afternoon bring softer light, cooler air and fewer boats at the famous caves.

7. Good to know

  • Weather cancellations: Boats stay in port when storm warnings are issued. Keep a spare day in your plans from July to October.
  • What to bring: Sunscreen, a hat, a dry bag for your phone, water shoes and a change of clothes.
  • Life jackets: Wear one in the kayak, even if you swim well. Check it fits before you leave the boat.
  • Cash: Bring Vietnamese dong for drinks, tips and small fees on the water.
  • Read the inclusions: Kayaks, bay fees, lunch and hotel pickups vary from boat to boat.

8. FAQs about Lan Ha Bay kayaking and boat trips

Do I need kayaking experience for Lan Ha Bay?

No. Guided kayaking stops are in sheltered water and most people manage a double kayak on their first try. Independent rental is better left to confident paddlers.

Is a day trip or an overnight cruise better?

A full-day trip covers the main highlights and suits most visitors staying on Cat Ba. An overnight cruise adds sunset and early morning on the water, when the bay is at its quietest.

Can kids kayak in Lan Ha Bay?

Yes, usually in a double kayak with an adult and a child-sized life jacket. A half-day tour is often a better fit for young children.

Can you swim in Lan Ha Bay?

Yes, most tours include a swim stop at a beach or off the boat. The water is warmest from May to October.

Lan Ha Bay kayaking and boat trips are the easiest way to see the bay's lagoons, caves and small beaches up close. Pick a full-day tour for the highlights, add a night on board for quiet, and leave a spare day in case the weather turns.
