Cat Ba Itinerary: How to Spend 2 or 3 Days

Flamingo Cat Ba Sea & Sand Resort

A realistic 2- or 3-day Cat Ba itinerary covering Lan Ha Bay, Cat Co beaches, Cannon Fort and Cat Ba National Park, with timings, costs and weather tips.

Boats on Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba

Two or three days on Cat Ba is enough to kayak Lan Ha Bay, swim at Cat Co beaches, climb to Cannon Fort and hike in Cat Ba National Park. This Cat Ba itinerary gives you a realistic 2-day plan and a fuller 3-day version, with timings, rough costs and tips for families and bad weather.

Updated October 2026.

1. How many days do you need on Cat Ba?

Two full days is the minimum to see Lan Ha Bay and get a feel for the island. Three days is better. It lets you add the national park, slow down at the beach and keep a spare day in case the weather delays your boat trip.

Getting from Hanoi to Cat Ba takes three to four hours each way, so a "2-day" trip works best with two nights on the island. If you only have one night, focus on Lan Ha Bay and skip the inland sights.

2. Before you go: planning your Cat Ba itinerary

A little planning makes a short trip much smoother. Book your bus from Hanoi a day or two ahead, and reserve your Lan Ha Bay tour for your first full day so you have a backup day if storms close the bay.

Most Lan Ha Bay day tours leave from Ben Beo Pier, about 2 km from Cat Ba Town, around 8:00 a.m. and return between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. Typical group tours cost around VND 1,000,000–1,500,000 per person as of 2026, including kayaking, lunch and swim stops. Your hotel or a tour office in town can book one the evening before.

3. 2-day Cat Ba itinerary

This 2-day Cat Ba itinerary covers the island's two classic experiences: the beaches and viewpoints around Cat Ba Town, and a full day on Lan Ha Bay. Plan for two nights so you can leave on the morning of day three.

3.1. Day 1: Arrive, beaches and Cannon Fort

Take a morning bus from Hanoi and you'll usually reach Cat Ba by early afternoon. Check in, drop your bags and head straight for the sand.

Here's how to spend the rest of the day:

  • 1:30 p.m.: Lunch, then an hour or two at Cat Co 1 or Cat Co 2 Beach, a short walk from Cat Ba Town.
  • 4:30 p.m.: Walk or ride up to Cannon Fort, about 2.5 km from the town center. The climb on foot takes 30 to 40 minutes, and entry has been around VND 40,000 per person. Parts of the fort have been closed at times for safety repairs, so check locally first.
  • 5:30 p.m.: Watch the sunset over Cat Ba Town, the harbor and the karst islands of Lan Ha Bay from the old gun emplacements.
  • 7:00 p.m.: Seafood dinner in town, where you can pick fish, clams and squid from tanks, or at a resort restaurant if you'd rather not go out.

If you still have energy, end the night with a drink and a view of the bay from a rooftop bar.

3.2. Day 2: Lan Ha Bay by boat and kayak

Day 2 is the highlight of any Cat Ba itinerary: a full day among the limestone karsts of Lan Ha Bay, part of the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lan Ha has the same scenery as Ha Long with fewer boats.

Here's what a typical day tour looks like:

  • 8:00 a.m.: Pickup from your hotel and transfer to Ben Beo Pier.
  • 9:00 a.m.: Cruise past Cai Beo fishing village and into the karst islands.
  • 10:30 a.m.: Kayak through lagoons and low caves, usually for 45 minutes to an hour and a half.
  • 12:30 p.m.: Lunch on board, then a swim stop at a small beach or bay.
  • 2:00 p.m.: Some tours add a bike ride through Viet Hai Village, a farming community inside the national park.
  • 4:30 p.m.: Back at Ben Beo Pier.

Spend the evening slowly. A long soak or a massage is welcome after a day of paddling, followed by an unhurried dinner.

4. 3-day Cat Ba itinerary

A 3-day Cat Ba itinerary follows the two days above, then adds a morning inland before you head back to Hanoi. The third day shows a different side of the island: forest, caves and wartime history.

4.1. Day 3: Cat Ba National Park and Hospital Cave

Start early, before the heat. Cat Ba National Park lies about 14 km from Cat Ba Town and opens around 7:00 a.m., with entry around VND 60,000 per person as of 2026.

Here's a plan that gets you back for an afternoon bus:

  • 7:30 a.m.: Ride or take a taxi to the park headquarters.
  • 8:00 a.m.: Hike the short, steep trail to the Ngu Lam viewpoint for views over the forested hills. Allow about one hour up and back, and wear proper shoes.
  • 9:30 a.m.: Visit Trung Trang Cave on the road between the park and town, if it's open.
  • 10:30 a.m.: Stop at Hospital Cave, a three-story hospital built inside a hill during the Vietnam War, about 10 to 13 km from town. Entry has been around VND 40,000–50,000, and a visit takes 30 to 45 minutes.
  • 12:00 p.m.: Lunch and check-out.
  • Afternoon: Bus back to Hanoi. As of 2026, departures typically run from midday to late afternoon, arriving in the evening.

Hikers with more time can book a guided trek through the park to Viet Hai Village instead. It's a long, tough day, so plan it as a full day of its own.

5. Adapting the itinerary

The plan above suits most adults, but it's easy to adjust for children or for the cooler months.

5.1. Cat Ba with kids

Keep days shorter and build around the beach. Swap the full-day tour for a shorter private boat trip if your children tire quickly, and skip the steep Ngu Lam climb with very young kids. Hospital Cave and Cannon Fort are usually a hit with older children who like history.

5.2. Cat Ba in winter or bad weather

From December to February the sea is cold, often around 19–20°C, so trade swimming for hiking, caves and long lunches. Boat trips still run on calm days and the bay can look beautiful in the mist.

If storms close the bay, use the day for the national park and Hospital Cave, then move your boat trip to the next morning. That's the main reason to book three days rather than two.

6. Getting around Cat Ba

Most of Cat Ba's sights lie within about 15 km of Cat Ba Town, so getting around is simple. Here are the main options:

  • Motorbike rental: Around VND 100,000–150,000 a day from shops in town. Roads are quiet but steep and winding, so ride only if you're experienced.
  • Taxi: The easiest choice for the national park, Hospital Cave and Ben Beo Pier if you don't ride.
  • Walking: Fine for Cat Co beaches, the town waterfront and Cannon Fort.
  • Tours: Lan Ha Bay day tours usually include hotel pickup and drop-off in the Cat Ba Town area.

7. Good to know

Keep these tips in mind as you plan:

  • Weather buffer: From June to October, storms can suspend boats, so put Lan Ha Bay on your first full day.
  • Weekends: Cat Ba is busy on Saturdays and Sundays, especially in summer. Midweek is calmer.
  • Cash: Carry Vietnamese dong for entrance fees, motorbike rental and small restaurants.
  • Sun and water: Bring sunscreen, a hat and plenty of water for Cannon Fort and the park trails.
  • Town works: Parts of the Cat Ba Town waterfront have been under reconstruction since Typhoon Yagi in 2024.

8. FAQs about planning a Cat Ba itinerary

Is 2 days enough for Cat Ba?

Yes, if you stay two nights. You'll have time for a full Lan Ha Bay tour, the beaches and Cannon Fort. Add a third day for the national park or as a weather buffer.

Can you do Cat Ba as a day trip from Hanoi?

It's possible on an organized tour, but you'll spend six to eight hours traveling. One night is the realistic minimum.

Should I stay in Cat Ba Town or by the beach?

Cat Ba Town is handy for restaurants and tour offices, while Cat Co beaches are quieter and still a short walk or ride from town. Both work well for this itinerary.

Do I need to book a Lan Ha Bay tour in advance?

Booking the evening before is usually fine outside peak season. For summer weekends and public holidays, book a few days ahead.

A good Cat Ba itinerary gives you one day on the beaches, one on Lan Ha Bay and, if you can, one in the national park. Book three days if you can spare them, so the weather never decides your trip for you.

After the bay and the trails, come back to Flamingo Cat Ba Sea & Sand Resort on Cat Co 1 and Cat Co 2 beaches. Ease tired legs in the Japanese-style pools of Ruriko Onsen, savor the day's catch at Sea Restaurant, then end the night at Lan Ha Sky Bar on the 17th floor. Children under 6 stay free when sharing their parents' bed.
