1. Should you pick a mountain or a beach resort near Hanoi?
Around Hanoi you'll find plenty of resorts in the mountains, by lakes or among forested hills, which work well for a day trip. But if you want a real swim in the sea, a sunset over the bay and fresh seafood, a beach resort in Hai Phong gives you a very different kind of break.
Of the beach areas near Hanoi, Cat Ba stands out because it has Lan Ha Bay, Cat Ba National Park and white-sand beaches with clear water. In a single weekend you get the sea, the forest and the bay.

2. How far is Cat Ba from Hanoi, and how do you get there?
Cat Ba is about 140 km from Hanoi, most of it on the Hanoi to Hai Phong expressway. You cross Tan Vu Bridge to Cat Hai Island, then cross the water to Cat Ba Island in one of three ways:
- Cat Hai to Phu Long cable car: fast and smooth, ideal if you aren't bringing a vehicle. Since April 8, 2026, it has run daily with six departures each way, leaving Cat Hai for the island at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The ride takes 10 to 15 minutes, and tickets have cost VND 70,000 per adult since September 7, 2026, with children under 1 m free.
- Dong Bai to Cai Vieng ferry: takes cars and motorbikes, so it suits groups driving themselves. From September 1 to December 31, 2026, it runs from about 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., sometimes later in good weather.
- Hanoi to Cat Ba bus: the ticket usually includes the crossing and takes you all the way into town.
Times are approximate and may change by season and by decision of the managing authority. Including the crossing and the drive into the island, allow about 3.5 to 4.5 hours from Hanoi, depending on how long you wait at the cable car station or ferry pier.

- Book early: on summer weekends and public holidays, beach resorts near Hanoi often fill up well in advance.
